Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market. Side by side and two of the oldest sites in Southwark. The first known reference to Borough Market was in 1276 and there’s been a religious building on the site of Southwark Cathedral since at least 1106! At that time it was an Augustinian priory known as St. Mary Overy, the latter part of which means “over the river”, referencing the church’s location across the river Thames from the City of London 🏙 It’s amazing to think of these two institutions of Southwark growing up alongside one another for all those centuries.

Happy #InternationalWomensDay! 💪 This is 15 Upper Mall in Hammersmith and the blue plaque on the outside is dedicated to Thomas Cobden-Sanderson, involved in the founding of the Doves Bindery and Press. We’re not talking about him today, however! I want to tell you about his wife, Anne, who would have lived here as well, but is not featured on the plaque.
